Healthy Mom Happy Baby Prenatal Yoga

Healthy Mom Happy Baby Prenatal Yoga

The evidence is clear - when you exercise regularly and gently during your pregnancy, you help yourself and your baby. Babies born to exercising mothers are healthier, experience fewer fetal complications during labor, and may even receive neurobehavioral benefits as a result of their mom s exercise regime while they are in utero.

Yoga is regarded as the ideal form of exercise for pregnant women a perfect way to meet the 30 minutes of exercise prescribed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Healthy Mom, Happy Baby is a gentle prenatal yoga practice designed for all three trimesters of your pregnancy. This video will help you:

- strengthen and build stamina in the muscles used during childbirth;

- learn meditation techniques to help you access deep relaxation a tool you can use to replenish yourself between contractions;

- learn breathing and visualization strategies to release tension and manage pain during labor;

- increase your confidence and trust in the innate wisdom of your body;

- connect with your changing body and your growing baby;

- enjoy uninterrupted time to explore your emotions as you make the transition to motherhood.

Healthy Mom, Happy Baby is suitable for women in all stages of their pregnancy. The practice begins with a gentle warm-up that includes centering breath work, followed by 40 minutes of physical poses and ends with a 10 minute guided relaxation. You can do the entire practice or you can create your own shorter practice by selecting one or more of the exercise series listed below from the DVD menu.

Prenatal Yoga includes:

1. Warm-up
2. Arm strengthening
3. Standing Series I and II
4. Balancing
5. Back Bending
6. Hip Opening
7. Final Relaxation (Savasana)

The Healthy Mom, Happy Baby Prenatal Yoga Practice is designed to help you through each day of your pregnancy. It provides you an opportunity to check in with your body and your growing baby as you link breath with movement; increase strength, stamina and flexibility; and build confidence. As you practice, learn to listen to the wisdom of your body and trust your intuition, since these are the keys to knowing what you and your baby need.

Yoga helped us on our journey to motherhood: from preconception to labor and delivery and during the postpartum recovery phase. Yoga continues to help us live graciously as we meet the challenges and experience the joys of motherhood each day. We are eager to share the gifts of yoga with you, gifts that you can use during your pregnancy as you nurture yourself into motherhood and your growing baby into life outside the womb.

5 Stars This is a great dvd even for those not pregnant!
I love this workout. In fact, I am going to order a copy of the DVD. I originally downloaded it from an exercise site but I want to have my own hard copy. I am not pregnant. I have no children (I wish). However, I am in my mid 30’s and wanted to incorporate yoga into my exercise routine. I’ve tried so many yoga DVD’s (too long, too hard, too complicated, too easy) but when I saw a preview of this dvd on youtube, I knew it was for me even though I wasn’t pregnant. I like to do workouts that can be done through all phases of life. For example, what I do at 35, I want to keep doing at 75. If in fact I am blessed with a pregnancy, I will not have to change my routine of Leslie Sansone walking and this yoga DVD. My flexibility has improved, I have a stronger core and I love the breath work to help relieve stress. Instead of focusing on a baby living inside of me, I focus on Jesus and the Holy Spirit instead. I am not interested in being a pretzel or performing amazing flexibility poses but I want to be strong and healthy.

5 Stars Excellent pre-natal yoga practice!
I have been practicing yoga for 5 years and found it difficult to keep up with my regular ashtanga routine when I was pregnant. Andrea’s Fitmom yoga vibe video allowed me to not only keep in shape while pregnant, but also physically and mentally ready for the birth of my second child. Also, the interview and Q&A session with Dr. Cram (OBGYN) helped answer some of my questions (yes, even as I second time mom, I had questions) and eased the anxiety of my upcoming birth. Thank you!

The DVDs are particularly designed to educate and empower a woman during the pregnancy period. As a therapist at the Stanford University Hospital, I witnessed injuries when Aerobic exercises were taught in lieu of Yoga Asanas Unlike other Yoga DVDs, the Yoga program in these DVDs specifically emphasizes the difference between Yoga Asanas and Aerobic exercises - which is conscious stretching with effort. Yoga program consist of (a) Asanas; (b) voluntarily controlled and guided various breathing practices; (c) relaxation; and (d) meditation. Unlike Aerobics, the Asanas are postural patterns that begin in a state of total relaxation, then blossom and unfold slowly and naturally in a continuous motion until they return, once again, to a state of total relaxation. When Yoga Asanas are performed merely as poses or postures, the real physiological benefits inherent in the Asanas are lost. Practice of yoga is ideal for a woman in her childbearing years as it non-strenuous and promotes restoration, relaxation and rejuvenation. The Yoga for prenatal program integrates my experience as a back school instructor at Stanford, and shows the importance of natural spinal alignment with illustration of spine during the practice. Yoga culture is ageless and provides variety of Asanas. A woman should commit in the wellness of her body and mind by regularly practicing the Asanas during all stages of life. The Yoga program in the DVDs is designed to practice mostly the same Asana in supine, sitting or standing positions during different stages of pregnancy. It offers a safe pace that is within the limit of physiological changes during pregnancy. The program shows why, and how, one should always be aware of the alignment of the spine while initiating, maintaining and releasing an Asana. It is necessary to continue daily Yoga practice anywhere, any time and any place, including during their traveling. Hence, an accordion booklet is provided, along with the DVD, to continue daily practice without any hiatus. Diligent practice of Yoga cultivates habit of good posture and delays diseases and old age. Pregnancy postural changes occur due to the forward shift in the center of the gravity and hormonal secretion. Practicing Yoga on a regular basis helps to cultivate a habit of maintaining upper, middle and lower back in a natural alignment during daily chores, household activities and in leisure activities. Learning and maintaining a good posture is the key point from early childhood, especially during pregnancy, motherhood and during the rest of one’s life. An efficient posture is comprised of a minimum amount of voluntary effort and a minimum amount of expenditure of energy for its maintenance and adjustment. Good postural habits protect joints from strain and conserves unnecessary use of energy by the musculature. The habit can easily be cultivated by regular practice of Yoga Asanas and correct breathing. Breathing is a powerful tool to practice to maintain harmonious and balanced emotional state. Yoga breathing improves oxygenation of circulating blood and optimal utilization of available oxygen. Guided breathing releases accumulated physical and emotional stress. Regular practice of various Yoga breathing renders alertness and decreases tiredness and fatigue. It decreases tiredness that is caused due to irregularities of sleeping during later stages of pregnancy. And last but not least, the Yoga program in these DVDs is designed to guide a pregnant woman to be her own teacher. It teaches how to tailor the program as per one’s own specific needs. A made to suit Yoga program will help women to integrate the program in their daily routine and through out their lives.

5 Stars Really great prenatal yoga dvd!
This is one of the best workout dvd’s I’ve used. I tend to buy them and get bored with them very quickly, and get annoyed by having to watch the intro every time. I love how its set up so you can just skip right to the program and do as much or as little as you want (its divided in segments). I have taken classes in person with this instructor and find this dvd to be very close to the actual experience! You feel relaxed, strengthened, and positive after completing it. Being unable to attend many actual yoga classes due to having a two year old, this is a great purchase!

5 Stars Not Just For Pregnant Women
The beautifully produced DVD provides pregnant women a way to continue to practice yoga as their bodies change to accommodate the new life within them. The set is aesthetically pleasing, the voice over is instructional and soothing, and the props used make the postures safe for both mother and child. An unexpected advantage to this product is that, having shown it to my mom, she now practices yoga! The use of props serves to modify the postures in a way that makes seniors able to practice yoga with comfort and ease so that they too, can experience the benefits of a yoga practice.

An inspired product.

5 Stars Well-done adaptation of a yoga favorite!
I have been searching high and low for something like this! I wanted a program that was:

1. Geared for pregnancy

2. Based on the sun salutation

3. Not too long

4. Had pleasant production values

This one fits the bill. The video is done entirely by a woman who looks to be in her 7-8th month of pregnancy. She does not speak, but the voice-over is done by the lady who also does the introduction to the program at the beginning of the DVD. Her voice is neutral and pleasant, without being monotone or boring. The set is attractive, decorated in a warm cranberry color that matches the exerciser’s leotard. The music is unobtrusive and pleasant as well.

I’m 42, pregnant with my 6th child and I very much appreciate the modifications in this DVD. Even with the modifications though, I feel a lot of energy and release of tension using this routine. I viewed the 20 minute “teaching” routine first. It could certainly be used daily if you wanted a longer salute with more repetitions, but I really like the 10-minute “flowing” version. It’s just long enough to give me a lift first thing in the morning, but not so long that I am tempted to skip it because I do not have time or am not feeling the best. There is also a 5 minute version of the routine, but I have not done that one because I really am enjoying the 10 minute version so much.

With this pregnancy, I find myself having to take my exercise in smaller chunks and this is a great first step each day. Perhaps if a woman was younger and a more experienced with this type of exercise, she might not find it challenging enough, but I’m not sure.

Incidentally, the instruction on this DVD does not use any Sanskrit words or any very mystical verbage that makes some of us uncomfortable, if we are not of that spiritual persuasion. I really appreciate that. They have a motto on the video at the beginning, something like “movement for everyone” and it really seems like they have tried to do that. Highly recommended!

5 Stars Perfect, in more ways than one!
I bought the Prenatal Sun Salute DVD for a friend, but decided to check it out before I wrapped the gift. After only a week of trying this wonderful program, my back and shoulders are more flexible! The “holding version” only lasts 10 minutes, and it is easy to find the time. A beautiful, soothing way to start the day! So yes, I highly recommend this DVD. If you are a grandmother-to-be, get an extra copy for yourself!

Selected by Fit Pregnancy magazine as a 2006 Editors Pick, this program has three yoga routines and three guided relaxations to help you be more comfortable now and prepare you for childbirth. The routines can be done separately or linked together for longer practice sessions. Equal emphasis is given to movement, breath, and relaxation. OPEN: seated and kneeling poses to connect your body, mind and breath. Breathing lesson — full flowing breath. (25 min.) FOCUS: standing and seated poses to energize and build strength. Breathing lesson — deep ‘ocean’ breath. (35 min.) SURRENDER: floor poses to help you relax and release. Breathing lesson — space between breaths. (20 min.) Use the 10-minute guided relaxations to end your practice, or do them on their own for a restful break in your day. FLOWER, FEATHER and CLOCK appeal to different senses to help you relax, release tension, connect more deeply with your baby, and replenish your energy. “As the former editor of a yoga magazine, I’ve seen a lot of yoga videos. This is one of the best — pregnant or not. It’s clear and concise, and the relaxations at the end are fantastic for overwhelmed moms-to-be.” Hillari Dowdle. 5 Stars Good pick for pregnant women.
I have been using yoga videos for 6 years. Now that I am late in my second trimester of pregnancy I have found some of the traditional yoga poses are becoming difficult and uncomfortable. Prenatal Yoga seems to be more gentle and appropriate for the pregnant body, while still providing opportunity for muscle tone. I have also liked how there are three routines that each last between 23 and 32 minutes, so one session is a perfect length for me to fit into my morning schedule. I have not tried any of the breathing relaxation exercises, but imagine that this woudl be useful preparation for childbirth.

2 Stars Prenatal Yoga for beginners
This DVD is good for pregnant women who have never done yoga before and are also in bad shape. If you have experience in Yoga or if you used to excercise regulary before your pregnancy, this DVD is not for you.

3 Stars Ok Yoga Video
I ordered this DVD when I was at the end of my second/entering my 3rd tri-mester. I tried the 3rd session, which is recommended for the 3rd trimester and I found one of the positions very uncomfortable and not able to do it. I am not overly big, and I have only gain 24 1/2 pounds, and I am on my 35th week, however, I found this one particular position unobtainable. Besides this I would suggest for viewers to have a soft floor to lay on and lots of room to move around.

5 Stars My friend loved it!
I got this for my friend who is pregnant and was bummed out when her Yoga class got cancled. She really seems to enjoy it and has used it quite a bit! From all I can tell she loves it and was super happy to get it!

5 Stars Great Preparation for Labor
I am so glad I bought this DVD, it has everything I wanted plus some stuff I didn’t know I’d want. Before I bought it I used only Shiva Rea’s yoga DVD almost every day for a few months and I needed variety. It has done a lot to lessen my hip pain (which was making it nearly impossible to move around before I started) and done a lot to help me relax and deal with anxiety problems and practice relaxations I will use in childbirth.

Pros

- It does a fabulous job of training you to move with your breath, which is what yoga is all about and is a great preparation for labor.

- The exercises are challenging but not too hard.

- The exercises really focus on positions that will help you during labor.

- There are three stand alone routines of about 20-30 minutes each so you can do just one a day or do a few in a row if you want a longer workout. After four or five months of doing the exact same workout every day this is a huge bonus.

- There are special features so you can choose to listen to just the music or just the instructions once you’re familiar with the exercises.

- The way they put it together is very relaxing.

- It also contains three separate guided relaxations so that you can rotate around and do different ones on different days.

- This DVD was put together by a yoga center instead of an individual yoga teacher and as a result I think the routines are better and the DVD overall has a lot more to it.

Cons

- The exercises may not be challenging enough earlier in your pregnancy if you already have been doing a lot of yoga. I didn’t get this until my 3rd trimester and it was great then because it’s so hard to move around when you’re so big, but it might be too easy if you do it in the beginning. Even if this is too easy for you at first, I still highly recommend you give it a try in your 3rd trimester.

- If you’re not into the more spiritual side of yoga the quiet relaxations and things that are so great about this DVD may not appeal to you.

The New Method Baby and Mom Prenatal Yoga

The New Method Baby and Mom Prenatal Yoga

Relaxing, strengthening, and allowing oneself to feel rather than think have long been associated with ancient yoga practice. Instructor Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa expertly ties this essential combination of physical experiences together in a gentle exercise video for pregnant women of all fitness levels. Prior to the 45-minute routine, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa discusses the role of yoga in helping with pregnancy; the calm and security that develop through guided breathing and gentle movement are transferred from the mother’s body to her growing baby. The nonimpact routine itself provides ample warm-up, toning, and conditioning portions, as well as a deep, head-to-toe relaxation and visualization segment. Ten pregnant students (all pleasantly unrehearsed) stretch, bend, and learn along with the viewer, to the peaceful sounds of a live band consisting of wood flute, bass, quiet drum, and shimmering bells. Every bit as enriching for the soul as it is for the body. –Liane Thomas

1 Star Not What I Was Looking For in a Yoga DVD
I have been practicing yoga for over seven years now with a studio, through various classes, and using home DVDs when my schedule is hectic. I did a fair bit of reading about prenatal yoga once I found out we were pregnant, and I knew my body would be very happy to have the yoga continue to help my back and my poor sciatic wonky-hip pain. My yoga studio has a prenatal class, but the schedule does not work with mine so I thought I would get a DVD to supplement until I could make it to classes again.

This was not the right video for me. There was too much discussion, too much commentary, and not enough actual yoga going on for my taste. I did not appreciate this woman attempting to facilitate my relationship with my “bay-bay” (hug your bay-bay, dance with your bay-bay, your bay-bay loves it when you do this move, etc). I have my own special time 24/7 with this beeb in my belly, and I did not get this dvd to inform me of the fact that I’m supposed to hug and love my belly. I needed some quiet time (she never stops talking) with some gentle moves to keep my back happy, my body moving, and my mind at ease. This DVD is currently sitting by the door as I will not use it again.

I’m not sure why I didn’t just go with the Gaiam dvd… it is now on order.

1 Star Creepy
I watched for 10 minutes and I had to stop. They make you chant at the beginning as a part of the workout and it’s really creepy. I was looking for a nice workout, not an introduction to a new religion.

3 Stars A very easy exercise
I was at my 16 weeks when I started to use this DVD. This is my first pregnancy. I enjoy exercising and before I got pregnant, I go to the gym at least once a week. I enjoy challenging lower-body toning exercises, bodycombat (high-cardio) classes, machine-weights to tone my upper body. I have done beginner to intermediate yoga classes and do not have a very flexible body. I now swim twice a week (20 minutes) and exercise to this DVD every other day.

The instructor is not pregnant in this video and looks very “zen-ish” with her head dress (a white turban looking thing). The video starts out with a 10-15 minute clip of her talking about how yoga is good for the mother and the baby.

During the next 5 minutes or so, she instructs the class to sit in an upright cross-legged position, with eyes closed and chant to a language I do not understand. Apparently, it means “I bow to the divine power in myself” or something to that effect. I find this section disturbing and do not like the sound of it at all, so I typically fast forward to the point where the lesson proper begins.

The class has a live band playing at the back of the room. Music is okay. The venue looks rather old-fashioned. However, lighting was okay. You will see some camera man moving behind the flowers and pillars once in a while. The women were dressed in big T-shirts and tights, others in full body suits. They have make-up on, and some look quite pretty and attractive. Nothing fanciful or appealing about the set, in general.

The next 30-minute section has very good exercises to help a pregnant woman stretch and relax her body. Gentle stretches and exercises that are only enough to get my heartbeat up by a little. However, even though the exercises are simple, I feel very good after at the end of it. I feel good to have stretched the thighs, arms, toes, calves, lower and upper back, neck, kegel muscle. All in all, if you are looking for a non-strenuous and gentle stretching exercise to help you to remain flexible and to relief stiff joints and aches, this would be the DVD. One thing to note, the instructor in this video emphasizes a lot on “feeling” the movements in the body and to release all inhibitions.

This is not the DVD if you are looking to tone those hips, butts and thighs and sweat it all out.

The video ends with another session of chanting (which I skip). Apparently, the words are supposed to heal and give you strength or something like that. And after that, we all lie down and close our eyes to relax, as with all yoga classes.

I am still waiting for two DVDs to arrive:

1) The Perfect Pregnancy Workout

2) Shiva Rea Prenatal Yoga

2 Stars Helpful exercises drowned in silliness
I was looking forward to a gentle challenge for my last month of pregnancy when I popped this video into the VCR (It was a hand-me-down tape from a friend). After losing my patience with the turban and muu-muu wearing instructor’s long monologue that opens the tape I fast-forwarded until I saw the typical exercise-video setup.

This was the beginning of the end for me. I resisted completely turning off the tape but couldn’t help laughing as I watched some of the overly-enthusiastic participants writhing around while the instructor croons “Your baaaaby loves to mooooove this waaaay.” It made me feel ridiculous.

The reason I gave it two stars is that there are a few truly useful exercises that can be learned if you can ignore the instructor, participants, and music to get to them. If you’re interested in trying this video, see if you can borrow it from the local library before you spend any money on it.

4 Stars Great for labor prep
Kinda silly looking as I guess it’s “look” is quite outdated now. But this video is wonderful. It’s very gentle and easy but felt great when I was 7 months and beyond during my pregnancy. I feel it’s focus is much more towards preparing and opening a woman’s body for birth rather than a typical yoga workout.

Retrospectively, it was this video and all the yogic philosophy that goes along with it that allowed me to birth naturally.

4 Stars Love this before bed during 3rd trimester
This is my favorite of three prenatal yoga dvds. I started it at around 34 weeks, as a yoga novice. I appreciate that it’s “doable” — she gives modifications of all the poses based on trimester, and I can do the entire workout without hurting myself. Her voice, the outdoor scenery, and the music are quite peaceful and relaxing. Also, the narration is not hokey; there are videos of her sonogram, and she often asks you to think of your baby.

If you are expecting a hardcore workout, you will be disappointed. This video is all about stretching and relaxing — I love doing it before bed at night. I find it a good complement to cardio workouts at the gym, and I count it as relaxation practice for my Bradley childbirth classes.

The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I don’t like the series of seated chair poses; they don’t feel good to me and seem to stretch the wrong muscles in the wrong way. I substitute a few other poses during that part. Otherwise, I really love this video.

1 Star Bad quality
I bought this dvd after reading the reviews of other pregnant women, and I was waiting something really nice. When the DVD arrived and I saw the first minutes of the workout I felt really dissapointed.

It is an amateur video, with a camera put in the middle of a park (?) and a lady trying to do some yoga. The image has a really bad quality and there is no selection of scenes.

It is really an amateur video of a couple: the husband holds the camera and his wife does the exercises.

Avoid it.

5 Stars Perfect!
This yoga video was absolutely perfect during my pregnancy. I had one other pregnancy video but the bouncing around of the aerobics was extremely uncomfortable. After all, that’s a lot of fluid and extra weight to be bouncing around! “Yoga for Pregnancy” was a smooth workout that stretched my sore muscles and helped my body feel invigorated. The instructor had a soothing, reassuring voice, which helped me relax and get in tune with my body.

I carried my baby really high which lead to extreme shortness of breath. I never felt like I could get a full breath in. This video helped me to use the capacity of my lungs and to take in deep, full breaths. It’s amazing what energy can come from deep breathing!

Pregnancy can be so hard on a body. This video was one of the only things I did that provided relief and made me feel better. I highly recommend it!

4 Stars mom2be
This yoga workout is very gentle and relaxing. If you’re looking for a good workout that makes you sweat, this is not for you! However, if you want something relaxing and easy with some labor preparation then you should check this out.

5 Stars Amazing prenatal yoga DVD!
I love this DVD! The poses are terrific-suitable for all trimesters and for REAL women. I don’t feel like I’m endangering my baby. A wonderful workout that makes you feel energized, relaxed, calm, and more centered. The music is lovely and the scenery is peaceful. I feel like she’s trying to help me, not kill me! Highly recommended.

I am not one of those pregnant moms who thinks that I need to burn it all off now or never. I wanted something that would be a gentle, but slightly challenging workout for someone like me. I found it here. I feel more prepared for labor, and more relaxed. It has helped tremendously with my sciatica. I feel more energized and like I’m not so short of breath. I found this DVD very enjoyable!

5 Stars Love it!
This is my favorite workout in my third trimester. It keeps me feeling good. I attribute this workout and the others I do to the reason I am still so mobile and able to do things almost like I usually do. It completely loosens everything up. Say goodbye to backaches and all those other pregnancy aches. I really like the prenatal modification for sun salutations, it is much more effective than the versions on my other workouts. This is a little slow for first and second tri if you usually exercise. If you want a more challenging 1st and 2nd tri workout try Kira Landgolf’s Total Body Tone or Erin O’Brian’s Prenatal Fitness Fix. I learned the hard way to stick with prenatal workouts in pregnancy, regardless of how good you may feel. I tore a muscle from overdoing (tricked by the relaxin I guess) during a regular workout. It took over a month to heal. I haven’t tried the postnatal workout yet, I’ll add a review when I get to that point. This DVD was very worth it. Other good prenatal workouts include Shiva Rea’s prenatal yoga and Crunch Yoga Mama. They are good quality, I used them during both of my pregnancies. If you are an experienced exerciser, they are really best for third tri. Try the ones I recommended above for the earlier days or just go for brisk walks (Leslie Sansone’s walking workouts have been great too!)

5 Stars Great, quick yoga workout
I did yoga for stretching and relaxation fairly often before becoming pregnant. Once my doctor discouraged my regular yoga class, I decided to try a prenatal video. This is one of several I’ve tried and by far my favorite. It is only 30 minutes but still feels like a good yoga workout - you feel relaxed, flexible and centered at the end, not sweaty or exhausted. The queing is good and I find Heather’s voice relaxing. There’s also a postnatal workout on the dvd that I plan to put to use in a few months.

2 Stars Not Great
I bought this in my 3rd trimester and only did it once. I am a big workout DVD fan but this just didn’t do it for me. It was boring and I found it to be of poor quality and a little too “fruity” for my liking.
